Ready to Rock: Introduction to Trad Climbing
This one day course is an introduction to trad climbing with the aim of giving participants a taste of the skills needed to climb independently outdoors on trad gear. It is perfect for anyone who has climbed indoors, on sport routes or seconded outdoor routes before.
Skills include:
Using guidebooks and crag etiquette
Refresher on fitting a harness and helmet, tying in and belaying
Climbing movement on rock
Intro to building anchors
Intro to trad gear

This course is for anyone who has climbed indoors, on sport routes or seconded outdoor routes before. Pre-requisites for this course:
Having climbed either indoors or outdoors before.
You should be able fit a harness, tie in and belay.

You will be required to have your own footwear such as approach shoes or lightweight boots to walk to the crag and climbing shoes, as well as suitable clothing for spending a day outdoors. You’ll also need to bring your own lunch and drink, and a rucksack big enough to carry your personal items as well as some group equipment.
Helmet and harnesses can be provided but you can bring your own if you have them. All ropes, climbing hardware and emergency group kit can be supplied.

This course is run at a maximum ratio of 1 instructor to 6 climbers.

We will meet at the Outside Shop in Hathersage at 9am.
Main Road, Hathersage, Peak District National Park S32 1BB
Will will return to Hathersage by 5pm.
Please note that cars cannot be left in the Outside carpark for the day because it is too small. The best place to park is
Oddfellows Road Carpark, Oddfellows Rd, Hathersage, Hope Valley S32 1DU.

Transport and carparking fees are not included. To get from Hathersage to a suitable crag we will need to car share and contribute to parking within your car share.
In case of bad weather we will find relevant skills outside or at a local climbing wall.
We try to stay outside but may suggest going to an indoor wall in poor weather if it will provide a better learning environment. Climbing wall fees are not included.
The fee is non-refundable but please do let us know if you are not able to attend so another person can have the opportunity to attend.
3 Day Course
North Wales
This course is designed for climbers who already have experience seconding traditional (trad) routes and are ready to progress to independent lead climbing on gear. Set against the backdrop of classic UK climbing venues in North Wales the course focuses on developing the skills, confidence, and judgment needed to safely lead trad routes.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Building solid, reliable traditional anchors and placing protection effectively
Rope management and efficient belay setups for single and multi-pitch routes
Lead climbing techniques, route reading, and movement efficiency
Managing risk, assessing rock quality, and making safe decisions
Building and equalizing belays, and safe leader falls practice (where appropriate)
Introduction to retreating and basic problem solving.
Many people find it beneficial to gain more time lead climbing to increase confidence and embed skills. Our 2 day Lead Climbing Progression course runs immediately after this course and is something to consider.

2 DAY Course
North Wales
The aim of this two day course is to progress climbers from basic trad lead climbing skills by working on proficiency and confidence. It is beneficial to new trad climbers or those who want a refresher course after a break from trad climbing or just feel like they could improve. It involves a lot of climbing and time to practise skills.
The course will be tailored to individuals needs and aspirations but skills which could be included:
Stance management and efficient ropework
Building belays refresher and refining gear placement
Climbing technique coaching and trad tactics
Getting off routes and descent
The day after this course is a rescue skills for climbers course (highly recommended) which will cover solving problems from a variety of locations including improvised rescue and self rescue.
The pre-requisites for this course are to have lead on trad gear before.
Courses are run in North Wales.

2 DAY Course
Learn how to climb multi-pitch trad routes safely and efficiently based in Eryri/Snowdonia, North Wales on this 2 day course.
The course content includes:
Equipment and gear management
Guidebooks and locating routes.
Route selection for weather, conditions and climbing level
Climbing calls and communication
Anchors: building multi-point trad anchors at belay stances and belaying
Placing trad gear and avoiding rope drag.
Stance management & transitions
Abseils and retreat
Basic problem solving (stuck gear, tying off a belay plate, communication breakdown)
The day after this course is a rescue skills for climbers course (highly recommended) which will include solving more complex problems self- rescue and rescuing a partner.
