The aim of this two day course is to progress climbers from basic trad lead climbing skills to confident and proficient climbers able to tackle harder routes. It is beneficial to new trad climbers or those who want a refresher course after a break from trad climbing or for anyone who feels like they have plateaued and wants to improve. It involves a lot of climbing and time to practise skills.

The course will be tailored to individuals needs and aspirations but skills which could be included:

  • Stance management and efficient ropework

  • Building belays refresher and refining gear placement

  • Climbing technique coaching and trad tactics

  • Escaping routes and descent

The pre-requisites for this course are to have led on trad gear before.

This course is run in Peak District based from Hathersage.

  • This course is for people who have led routes on trad gear before. The routes previously led can be at any grade.

    You should also be competent at lead belaying.

  • This course tailors the course content to individuals but typically covers the following skills:

    Stance management and efficient ropework

    Building belays refresher and refining gear placement

    Climbing technique coaching and trad tactics.

    Escaping routes and descent

    Avoiding problems and basic problem solving.

    Lots of climbing!

  • Led routes and built belays on trad gear at any grade.

    Competent lead belaying.

  • All ropes, climbing hardware and emergency group kit is supplied. Climbing harnesses and helmets can be supplied on request. Participants will need outdoor clothing and footwear, climbing shoes and food for each day according to the kit list supplied.

  • This course is run at a ratio of 1 instructor to 2 climbers.

  • The Peak District course will meet at the Hathersage Swimming Pool café.

    In case of bad weather we will find relevant skills and activities at low level or go to a local climbing wall.

    We try to stay outside but may suggest going to an indoor wall if it will provide a better learning environment. Climbing wall fees are not included.

    If a participant cancels between 4 and 2 weeks before the course 50% can be refunded. If less than 2 weeks no refund is given.

    We recommend taking insurance to cover unforeseen events like illness.
