A Love Her Wild weekend for women based on the West Coast of Scotland.

Build the skills and confidence you need to enjoy the mountains in winter.

Our 2 day Winter Skills Course on the WEST COAST OF SCOTLAND is designed for people who want to develop their winter mountain walking skills and become more confident travelling through snow and ice-covered mountain terrain. Whether you're new to winter or looking to refresh and consolidate your skills, we'll give you the practical tools to make informed decisions and move safely in the mountains.

Over the course, we'll cover essential winter techniques including ice axe and crampon skills, moving safely on steep snow, cutting steps, winter navigation, route choice, avalanche awareness and what to do in the event of a slip or fall. We'll also look at equipment, clothing, mountain weather and the factors that influence winter conditions.

The emphasis is on hands-on learning and building real-world confidence. You'll have plenty of opportunity to practise techniques in the mountains, with guidance tailored to your experience and the conditions on the day.

You'll learn:

  • How to use an ice axe and crampons effectively

  • Safe movement on snow-covered terrain

  • Self-arrest and techniques for stopping a slide

  • Winter navigation and route planning

  • Understanding snow conditions and avalanche awareness

  • Winter route choice and decision making

  • How to prepare for a day in the winter mountains

  • Mountain safety, emergency skills and risk management

No previous winter experience is required, although a reasonable level of summer mountain fitness is recommended.

The aim isn't simply to teach you a set of techniques, but to help you develop the judgement, awareness and confidence to make good decisions in the winter mountains.

Based from Fort William.

Conditions and itinerary will vary depending on weather, snow and avalanche conditions, and the course will be adapted to make the most of what the mountains give us on the day.

  • This course is for Love Her Wild women’s adventure community.

    No previous winter experience is required. To get the most out of the course, experience in summer mountain walking and a good level of mountain fitness is recommended.

  • The emphasis is on practical learning and building real-world confidence. You'll have plenty of opportunity to practise techniques in the mountains, with instruction tailored to your experience and the conditions on the day.

    You'll learn:

    • How to use an ice axe and crampons effectively

    • Safe movement on snow-covered terrain

    • Self-arrest and techniques for stopping a slide

    • Winter navigation and route planning

    • Understanding snow conditions and avalanche awareness

    • Winter route choice and decision making

    • How to prepare for a day in the winter mountains

  • A full kit list is sent on booking the course.

    In summary, you will be required to have:

    • Rucksack 30-40l

    • Winter clothing including waterproof jacket and trousers

    • Food for the day

    • Gaiters

    • Winter boots*

    • Ice Axe*

    • Crampons*

    • Helmet^

    *These can be hired locally

    ^This can be borrowed as part of the course.

  • A maximum group size of 6 people to 1 instructor.

    There is a minimum number of 4 people for this course to run. Please don’t book any non-refundable travel or accomodation until it is confirmed that the minimum numbers have been reached.

    Our skilled and knowledgeable leaders and instructors will use the weather forecast and conditions to make a decision on where is the best place to go for the course.

    To make the best use of the day the instructor may suggest using local ski lifts to access winter terrain quickly, maximising the time spent on snow. The cost of these are not included in the course cost and would be an additional £20-29 depending on the lift used.

  • Accomodation is not included in the cost of this course and participants are responsible for finding their own accommodation. Affordable accomodation recommendations in and near Fort William
